I can hardly believe that it is already practically Mother's Day! I only say this because that means I'm graduating super soon! As I've mentioned before, this year is an incredibly huge year in my life. A lot of changes are going to be happening soon and to be honest I'm not sure I am ready, but we'll see! Today, I have a lovely unconventional Mother's Day card to share with you all. 

I started with my usual base of 110 lb. white cardstock scored at 4 1/4" to create an A2 sized card. Then, I layered a piece of DCWV cardstock from their jeweled cardstock collection which is cut to 4" x 5 1/4". I like how these cardstocks have a waffle texture to them. It adds a lot of visual interest to the card.  

Once I had everything painted and it had dried, I matted it with some black cardstock. I wanted to fill in the gap at the bottom of the card to make the spacing look more even. I ended up grabbing another sheet of white cardstock, then I used a Fiskars border punch. This adds just enough detail to the card that it makes it more feminine and less boxy. I also added some Doodlebug sprinkles in a silver glitter for more detail.

To begin this card, I cut a piece of Canson watercolor paper to 4" x 5 1/4" (links to products will be down below). Now to gather your watercolor supplies. I used one brush (small/medium sized) and then I used my watercolor palette that you've seen in my videos. Before you begin putting any water on your paper, make sure you also have paper towels and two cups of water. One cup will be for dirty water and then the other cup will be clean water (you'll see why in a little bit). 

Now we can get into some watercoloring fun! You'll want to wet each color in your palatte that you are going to use in your flower arrangement. If you already have a flower arrangement in mind then we can jump right in, if not, then you'll perhaps want to sketch on a scrap piece of paper what you may want your floral arrangement to look like. Be sure to try and make it balanced and not to overcrowd your flowers. 

To make the orange Marigold like flowers, you will want to clean off your brush and dip it into the clean water. Taking this clean water, you'll want to make an asterisk shaped puddle to the size you want your flower. Once you're happy with the shape you have created, you'll want to saturate your brush with your first color. I chose orange for mine. Take your brush covered in color and dip it into your puddle. You'll notice that the color will start moving on its own, but help it move around the entire puddle if you need to. Now that your entire mini asterisk puddle is filled with color, you have two options. The first option is allowing it to air dry, which will give you the most vibrant color. The second option is to use your paper towel and blot your painting to get a more pastel look. Experiment with what you like and develop your watercoloring style.  

All of the other flowers follow the same pattern. Draw the shape in clean water, add your color. If you want to add more depth, add different layers on top of dry layers (like on my marigold flowers). I added a stamp that reads "mom" from Technique Tuesday in Memento black ink. To complete this card I mounted the watercolor paper onto a kraft cardstock card base using foam adhesive.
