VIDEO: 12x12 Layout Mixed Media // Ted is the Best
September 17, 2016
Hello friends! Welcome back to another layout process share! Today, I'm tackling one of my biggest pet peeves....those dreaded pre designed pieces of paper that get mixed in the paper stacks that we are addicted to buying. They are so pretty, but I always have trouble using them for some reason. I decided it was time to conquer my fears. In today's post and video we will look at different ways to use this paper to its full potential!
This is a fairly simple layout, but it's also very busy at the same time. In the process video below, you'll see my mixed media fun! If you are timid to try mixed media, I think that stenciling like this project shows, is a great introduction to it. But, if you don't have the supplies for it or don't like the look of it, this page is still great inspiration!
I discuss most of the products I used in the process video, but if you have any questions please let me know! I also have links to most of the items at the end of every post for your buying convenience. Now, on with the show!
These pesky pre-designed papers can be intimidating for sure. They look so pretty, but how do we use them to their full potential? In this case, I used the pre-printed elements on the page as grounding points for my clusters. Each cluster touches a lace piece of the background paper. This will help the photo and the elements to feel grounded and cohesive. You could also do the opposite of this and avoid the pre-designed pieces all together. Like the top right and bottom left corner of this piece of paper.
I think that simplicity is often key when working with papers such as this one. It has a lot of textures built into it and it was very intimidating to work with. I chose a simple color scheme, simple pieces, and relatively smaller pieces to make the layout work. I tried to implement some splatters to create more texture as well as creating a cohesiveness to the pieces I added on top of the paper.
Overall, I think that depending on the piece of pre-designed paper you pick, you should let the pre-design dictate the placement of your photo and main embellishments. If you're feeling a little like taking a leap, try and doing the inverse. I've seen several layouts that look great either way. I hope this layout inspired you to get a little messy, and use those pre-designed papers! Thanks for stopping by!
