VIDEO: Color Theories Series // Red Monochromatic 12x12 Layout Process Video

January 27, 2018

Guess what's back?! The Color Theories Series is back for another round! This time I am joined by Cynthia for the series! This series essentially challenges us to make monochromatic layouts featuring every color of the rainbow. This week we're kicking it off from the beginning of the rainbow with Red/Pink layouts. I took this opportunity to tell this cute Valentine's Day story from last year.

This layout features a lot of papers from the Simple Stories Life in Color collection. I used a lovely black and white polka dot patterned paper for a background. I used a red distressed patterned paper for a nice layer under my photos. The red really pops with the white background. I layered a couple more papers under my photo from that paper pad. Enjoy the process video below and check out Cynthia's video after!

I wanted my photo to pop more against the red panel and decided to also pair a white doily underneath. I featured my classic black polka dot washi tape from Scotch along the left hand side. Trying to vary the contrasts across the page will help make it more visually appealing.

I created a small cluster to the bottom left of my photo. Since this is a monochromatic layout, I needed to have various textures and styles to make it truly interesting. I used a Kaiser Craft camera cut apart, a Freckled Fawn flair, some resin flowers, a couple of Tim Holtz tiny word stickers, an American Crafts Thickers asterisk, and some puffy hearts from Target, Recollections, and Amazon. As you can tell there are so many different textures and dimensions here that your eye will sit there a little bit longer to take all of it in.

Above my photo I wanted a little bit of something. I decided that the doily peeking out just wasn't enough. I picked out this teeny paper clip from KI Memories to include as just another small element. Although it doesn't stick out that much, it adds the tiniest bit of extra texture. I love to fuss about little details like this.

I love how my title came out, despite it being different that what I originally intended. I used two types of American Crafts Thickers paired with a puffy sticker from Pink Fresh Studio. The pink number "2" is the Ladybug Patchwork design and the word "hearts" is from the marquise style. Mixing and matching fonts is one of those little things in scrapbooking that I like to experiment with! Do you like to do this or are titles not exactly your fav? I'm not too great at coming up with titles, but making them look nice is my specialty!

I decorated the area around the title with a bright red doily from Recollections. I used little bits and bobs like my resin flowers, puffy heart stickers, and tiny word stickers to add a little more interest. I try not to crowd too many things together near my title since it is supposed to pop on its own.

I wanted to expand the title cluster outside of the range of the doily a little bit more. I picked out this chipboard sticker that reads "whole lotta lovely" from Paige Evans and a Simple Stories arrow sticker to make a knock out combo. The perfect finishing bit to the layout! I hope you enjoyed the first episode in the second season of Color Theories! Don't forget to watch Cynthia's take on the challenge as well. Thanks for stopping by!
